Richey Edwards : A Short Biography...
Written By Kat Borges All Rights Reserved : This is not to be used without my permission.

Richard James Edwards was born on December 22, 1967 to parents, Graham and Sherry Edwards. I suppose you could say he had a typical upbringing. He was very intelligent and did well in school.Richey grew up with fellow Manic's Nicky Wire, James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore. They remember it being just them. They were the kinds of friends that stuck to each other. When it came time for them to go to college they went to different colleges, but still kept up with each other through letters and occasional weekend visits.Unfortunetly for Richey, college was not the greatest experience. He went there assuming that all the other students were there for the reason he was, to learn. However this was not the case.He was more often than not kept awake at night because the other students would be loud and partying all through the night.Richey was not like this.He wanted to be able to sleep at night so he could be alert and do well in class. His only way to get to sleep, was alcohol. He would basically drink himself to sleep.College wasn't a necessarily good time for him.

Growing up, the Manics were deeply interested in music. So it only seemed natural for them to give a go at having their own band.Originally, Richey was not in the lineup. He was simply a roadie. Then, bassist Flikr left the band.In came Richey.Nicky moved to bass and Richey played rhythm guitar.Well, sort of...As the story goes, apparently Richey actually could not play guitar very well at all. However, he most certainly gave alot to the band.Richey and Nicky did lyrics.Sean and James did music.Richey's, lyrics were especially interesting.Richey proved to be an excellent poet, and his lyrics had great depth   and as well was fearless. The Manics lyrics tapped into all kinds of controversial subject, anorexia, self injury, alcoholism( even politics), all of which were experienced by Richey.Richey did most of the interviews, and Richey proved to be the spokesman of the band.He wasn't afraid to say what he thought, somthing most bands avoid in fear of their reputation.

One of the most recognized events of Richey's career, is one of the most....gruesome ones. One day Richey was being interviewed by the quite critical, Steve Lamaqu.Lamaqu, was beginning to annoy Richey. He asked Richey what the seriousness of the band was.Richey answered not at all silently, by carving the words: "4-real" onto his forearm with a razor blade. He ended up in the hospital, receiving 18 stitches.Lamaqu, says that to this day he doesn't even know where Richey got the blade from, whether it be it was on the ground or if Richey had carried it with him.The band said that they were surprised by this, but have sense said they think Richey may have planned it.

It was the night before the Manics first American tour.Richey had backed out of plans of going out with James to the movie theater and had decided to spend the night alone in his hotel room. This was the very last night he would be seen by the band. This was the night he would make a decision that would affect, his band, his family, his fans, and his very own existence.

The next morning, February,1,1995 to be exact Richey James Edwards checked out of his room at the Embassy Hotel in London, and was never seen since. He left behind a box, with two videos and a note for his female friend that had the words "I love you" scrawled on it.He drove his car to Cardiff (this is also where his Flat is located)   and   his car was found   near the Severn Bridge with a dead battery, it is described as looking slept in.And from that day on there hasn't been a   confirmed sighting of him.Richey's parents tried desperately to get in contact with him, newspaper and magazine ads, everything. But with no luck.

Everyone has their own opinions on what they believe happened to him, but I suppose we will never really know.Unless of course he ever turns up.But 12+ years of being gone and then coming back, well, lets face it, if it were you, you probably wouldn't want to talk about it.

In closing, I just hope wherever he may be that he has found the inner peace he longed for.I wish him the best wherever he may be <3 God bless him, the Manics and especially his dear family.
